Our  Story

IN THE BEGINNING…
1 The vision began as Expressionz Café, Market and Meeting Place -  A place where people would come together to relax, and experience gourmet tastes, and a range of local arts and entertainment. Designed for “sense satisfaction”, Expressionz aimed to titillate the taste buds, ooo la la the olfactory, exercise the eardrums, variegate the view and animate the atmosphere.

Opening its doors Dec 1, 1999, Expressionz was certainly unique. It could be better described as a “centre”, appealing to a mature crowd interested in sharing and experiencing the simple joys of  life. It offered the individual an opportunity to become a part of something. It became a highly desirable venue for performer and audience alike, its’ homey and intimate atmosphere providing a setting unmatched in the city.

Expressionz also became a backdrop and retail outlet for a growing number of local artisans. Customers and friends enjoyed shopping for original gifts, while artists enjoyed creating and presenting their works in an inspiring and animated atmosphere.

Over time events programming grew to include a variety of private functions and workshops such as the LUNCH HOUR TALK series produced by the Community Networks Group, with guest speakers covering a variety of human-interest topics.

“Guest Chef’s” were beginning to frequent the kitchen, introducing their favorite recipes and culinary tips. These successful luncheons and gatherings truly made Expressionz a meeting place.

In addition, the School of Life was born. An Arts Mentoring Program dedicated to offering children free access, and community affordable access to the arts and other skill mentoring programs.

Local artisans share their knowledge and talents in a friendly, healthy and non-competitive environment through a series of introductory and experiential workshops.

In the first two years of operation, Expressionz created a strong foundation, connecting with many local community groups, and developing relationships with Arts Industry Professionals and Associations across the country. Many of our initial goals were reached, while others continued to adapt and evolve.   After 2 ½ years of successful operation, an unfortunate chain of events led to the temporary closure of the café in May of 2002.

With the help of many, Expressionz Café overcame the challenges it met along way and today embarks upon the next leg of the journey with a great and renewed spirit. Thank you to everyone (!!!!!) who made it possible.

Your contributions are immeasurable. God bless you.

Born of one person, nurtured along by several, it presently lives in the hearts of many.

It was decided that a Not-for profit Company would be the best entity to carry on the journey and serve the needs and aspirations of the vision. On August 8th, 2003, 1061067 Alberta LTD was incorporated and presently operates the trade names Expressionz Café and The School of Life.

We always have been, are, and will continue to be under construction – from the grassroots up.  The truth is stranger than fiction and dreams do have a way of coming true.
